Maintaining your jewellery

If you have just bought or received a beautiful piece of Zinzi jewellery, you want to keep it beautiful for as long as possible. By following our maintenance tips you will certainly succeed. Give it a try. Your jewellery is worth it!

Tip 1: Take off your jewelry during sports or swimming

When you're engaging in sports or swimming, it's better to take off your Zinzi jewelry or leave it at home. During exercise, sweat can cause your silver jewelry to turn black due to oxidation. When swimming, chlorine can cause your jewelry to discolor or become dull. Seawater can also damage the precious metal due to its salt content. If you've worn your jewelry while exercising or swimming, make sure to rinse it thoroughly with clean water afterward.

Tip 2: Remove your jewellery before going to sleep

Take off your jewelry before going to bed. Even during the night, you may perspire, which can accelerate the oxidation process for silver jewelry. Additionally, unexpected movements at night can cause a necklace or bracelet to break.

Tip 3: Put on your jewelry after your morning skincare routine

Various cosmetic products such as creams, perfumes, and makeup can damage your jewelry. Never spray perfume directly onto your jewelry and avoid contact with hairspray as well. Therefore, the best advice is to put on your jewelry last.

Tip 4: Take off your jewelry when cleaning

Are you doing a major cleaning in your house? It's also advisable to take off your jewelry then. Aggressive cleaners like chlorine and vinegar can cause your jewelry to discolor.

Also, if you're going to do heavy labor, such as moving, renovating, or working in the garden, take off your jewelry. This prevents damage or scratches on your jewelry, since gold and silver are soft materials.

Tip 5: Store your jewelry in a jewelry box

You'll keep your jewelry looking its best by storing it, for example, in a jewelry box. Even when traveling, we recommend safely storing your jewelry and not putting it in your toiletry bag due to potential leaks. Never store your jewelry in the bathroom, as jewelry doesn't like moisture. Also, make sure to store your jewelry separately from each other so that necklaces and bracelets don't tangle, and the jewelry doesn't damage each other.

Cleaning your silver jewellery

If you wear a silver piece of jewelry intensively, it may lose its shine and even discolor. For example, a silver ring may turn black. Silver turns black due to a chemical reaction called oxidation. Oxidation occurs due to the acidity of your skin, but exposure to perfume, sweat, water, or high humidity can also cause your jewelry to discolor. Discoloration due to oxidation is therefore not a defect but a reaction to your skin or environment. But don't worry, fortunately there are solutions for this:

Tip 1: Cleaning silver jewelry with a polishing cloth

The best and 'safest' solution is to clean your silver jewelry with a polishing cloth. We recommend trying this first before using cleaning agents. Polishing is the gentlest treatment for your silver jewelry. You can use a special silver polishing cloth or a soft microfiber cloth. Do not use a hard cloth or sponge.

Tip 2: Cleaning silver jewelry with dish soap

If there is dirt or grease on your silver jewelry, you can clean the silver piece with dish soap. Make a soapy solution with lukewarm water and a few drops of liquid dish soap. Dip your silver jewelry in it. Then, you can gently brush the jewelry with a soft toothbrush. Rinse your jewelry afterward with lukewarm water and dry it with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, as stones such as Swarovski crystals, colored stones, and zirconias can discolor when using chemical cleaning agents.

Tip 3: Cleaning silver jewelry with silver polish

Of course, you can also clean your silver jewelry with special silver polish. This cleaning agent is specially developed for silver. Let the silver jewelry soak in the silver polish for a while. Then, rinse the jewelry thoroughly and dry it again with a soft microfiber cloth.

Cleaning your gold plated jewellery

Our gold plated jewelry is made of real sterling silver with a thin layer of 14-karat gold. Handle these pieces with extra care because the thin layer is particularly fragile. We recommend gently polishing any dull gold plated jewelry only with a soft polishing cloth. Do not use a hard cloth or sponge, and avoid using cleaning agents, as they can damage the thin gold layer and shorten the lifespan of the gold coating.

Cleaning your gold jewellery

Your gold jewelry also deserves an occasional polish. Gold jewelry doesn't oxidize like silver jewelry, but due to external influences and the pH level of your skin, your gold piece may become dull. With our tips, you'll ensure that your gold jewelry will shine again. However, be careful: gold is a precious material, so handle it delicately and avoid chemical cleaning agents or abrasives.

Cleaning a gold necklace, ring, earrings, or bracelet:

Step 1: Prepare a solution with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap, such as Dreft. Place the jewelry in the solution and let it soak for a few minutes.

Step 2: Gently rub the jewelry with a soft cloth. You can also use a soft toothbrush for this purpose.

Step 3: Rinse the gold jewelry thoroughly and dry it well with a microfiber cloth. Avoid using a harsh cloth.

And there you have it! In addition to the above method, you can also clean your gold jewelry with gold polish from HG. This is a balm that will restore the shine to your gold jewelry and make scratches less visible.

Cleaning the colored stones in your jewellery

Colored gemstones and zirconias can become dull due to skin oils, soap, oils, or environmental factors such as polluted air. Restore their shine by immersing them in a solution of lukewarm water with mild soap. Then, gently brush the jewelry with a soft toothbrush. Rinse your jewelry afterward with lukewarm water and dry them with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, as stones such as Swarovski crystals, colored gemstones, and cubic zirconias can discolor when exposed to chemical cleaning agents.

Cleaning your Zinzi watch

Your Zinzi watch is splash-resistant, so do not clean the watch with water. Both the case and the hardened mineral glass can be cleaned with a dry, soft polishing cloth. If you want to clean your watch strap, first remove both straps from the case. Now you can clean these straps with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft toothbrush. Rinse the watch straps with clean water and dry them with a soft cloth. Only when the straps are completely dry, reattach them to the case. Note: ensure that the watch itself remains dry. Zinzi uses Japanese quartz movements in its watches. The battery must be replaced on time, otherwise, it may leak. So if your watch is running slow or stopped, take it to a nearest jewellery. A battery is not expensive, and this prevents larger damage.
